A Tableware from Pickman La Cartuja de Seville for Frs. Piarists of Guanabacoa in Havana
Main Article Content
Abstract
On November 19, 1857, the first Piarist school in Cuba and America, the Pious Schools of Guanabacoa, was inaugurated in Havana. It became one of the most prestigious educational centers on the island. In its more than one hundred years of existence, it educated thousands of Cuban adolescents intellectually and morally.
Just as numerous Pious Schools throughout Spain did, Frs. Piarists from Guanabacoa also commissioned the Sevillian pottery factory Pickman to make their personalized tableware. The pieces of this table service that are preserved today, show their emblem and distinctive sign stamped in the center, accompanied by a colorful decorative design.
